Because of my interest in the summer encampment of the allied American and French armies in 1781 in Westchester County, N.Y., I have long wanted to know where Henry Knox was located in July and August 1781-- was he at the Westchester encampment or was he not? It turns out that he was indeed at the encampment. "Unending Passions" gives the answer in a July 26, 1781 letter, written by the general. Unending Passion, The Knox Letters by Pamela Murrow is a must-read for persons interested in the Revolutionary War and Colonial America. Mrs. Murrow has compiled the poignant letters between Henry Knox and his beloved wife, Lucy Flucker Knox. Spanning the years and the hardships of the Revolutionary War, Henry and Lucy give a first-hand account of their fears, their worries, their triumphs and their love of their country and their love of each other.
Unfortunately, Henry Knox is not always afforded the prominence he should receive as the General in charge of Artillery and later as President George Washington's Secretary of War. He was a self-taught man who utilized strategies and engineering feats that he acquired through his reading and through his experiences.
Lucy Knox was a loving and devoted wife who believed the future of the Country was more important than pleasing her ardently Royalist family. It created hardships and loneliness for her, but she adhered to her faith in her God, her husband and her Country.
This book is excellent.
I'm really pleased with this book. I work for the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, and it is a wonderful resource.
